Lighting A Candle To Lift My Spirits
Updated: Mar 12
Lighting a candle is my key to obtaining a state of hygge. Hygge (pronounced hue-guh) is a Danish word that is used to describe a quality of coziness, comfort and conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.
Growing up in ND where the winter is unbearably long and cold, a person has to create their own comfort and warmth 8 months out of the year. Luckily, my Scandinavian heritage and ancestors were longtime experts at creating their own contentment in order to survive the dark, dreary and cold environment.
I use candles in many ways to achieve a sense of calm. It isn’t the fragrance that gives me this feeling but the glowing light. On winter evenings or on rainy days, I light a candle or two in our living room. On really stressful days, a bath and candle have been my go-to for melting the stress away.
In my many years of candle burning experience, I have learned that not all candles are created equally, and it is important to have one that burns down properly. There is nothing worse than a candle that is half-used and will not burn anymore because of an overabundance of wax.
My two favorite brands are Illume & Thymes. Both of these candle companies have mastered the art of making a high quality candle.
My absolute favorite fragrances are Illume’s Balsam & Cedar and Thymes Frasier Fir, especially during the winter and holiday season. They burn down properly and give off a steady glow. If you are not a fan of the pine scent, both companies have many other fragrances to choose from. As we head into the winter and holiday season, I will be stocking up on these two candles for my daily ritual of creating my own hygge.
