Treating Yourself On Valentine's Day

Updated: May 31

Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice illustrates many life lessons including the significance and consequence of your family, as well as the one you marry into, the lifelong bond of sisters, the fact that first impressions are not always accurate, and the importance of knowing yourself, what you need and staying true to that even if doing so leads to a harder path.

The older I get, the more I understand the importance of knowing myself, my needs, how to take care of them and how relying on someone else to do so only leads to disappointment. It is empowering once you realize that your happiness is up to you and that you can fulfill your needs and not rely on anyone else to do so. How many times have we been disappointed on an anniversary, birthday or yep the big one, Valentines Day? Too many to count, right?

When I think of Valentines Day, I have a mix of emotions. I love this beautiful holiday that is filled with red and pink hearts, fragrant roses, sweet candy and special gifts. It also is a holiday that leads to a lot of dread and anxiety for men and a lot of times, disappointment for women.

A few years ago, I decided that it might be a good idea to change things up. I wanted to take charge of my own experience on Valentines Day and lessen the expectation for my husband. So I suggested that we start a new tradition of giving each other a box of chocolate and a card. No fancy gifts or dinners, just good old chocolate and written word. It was perfect for us. It was less overwhelming, never disappointing and still held a little surprise as to what type of chocolate we were going to get.

As far as missing out on receiving those special gifts, well I decided that every year I would buy myself a new piece of jewelry for Valentines Day. It is something that I look forward to every year and now I have a little collection of items that I have purchased for myself. After all Valentines Day is a holiday about love, right? And Loving yourself is the beginning and center out from which loving anything else begins.

On my list this year, one of my favorite go to treat myself items - a new bracelet from Lucky Star Jewels.
